Shopify Plus vs Shopify: Which Plan Is Right for Your Brand in 2026?

Shopify Plus is one of the most misunderstood products in ecommerce. Some brands upgrade too early and pay for features they don’t need. Others wait too long and leave serious operational leverage on the table. The question isn’t just “what’s the difference?” — it’s “which one makes sense for your business right now?”

I’ve worked with brands on both plans, and I’ve seen the upgrade decision go well and badly. Here’s how to think about it clearly.

Pricing: What You’re Actually Paying

Standard Shopify plans (Basic, Shopify, Advanced) range from around $29 to $299/month, with transaction fees that decrease as you move up. These plans cover the vast majority of growing ecommerce stores.

Shopify Plus starts at $2,500/month (on a revenue-based variable fee model above a certain threshold, this can scale higher). The fee structure changed in recent years — check the current Shopify Plus pricing page for your revenue tier, as the exact number depends on your GMV.

The math: Shopify Plus is only financially rational once you’re generating enough revenue that its features save you more — in development costs, operational time, or conversion rate improvements — than the price premium. For most brands, that inflection point is somewhere between $500K and $1M in annual revenue, but it depends on your specific situation.

Feature Comparison

Here’s a clear look at what changes when you upgrade:

Checkout Customization

  • Shopify (standard): You can customize the checkout’s colours, logo, and font via the branding editor. Code-level changes to checkout.liquid are not available.
  • Shopify Plus: Full access to checkout extensibility — add custom UI blocks, upsells, trust badges, loyalty point display, and custom logic via Checkout UI Extensions. For stores where checkout optimization is a priority, this alone can justify the upgrade.

Flow and Automation

  • Shopify (standard): Basic automation via Shopify Flow, with a limited set of triggers and actions.
  • Shopify Plus: Full Shopify Flow with expanded triggers, actions, and the ability to build complex multi-step workflows — automatic tagging, fraud escalation, wholesale order routing, inventory reorder triggers, and more.

B2B and Wholesale

  • Shopify (standard): B2B is possible but requires workarounds — separate password-protected stores, app-based solutions, or price list workarounds.
  • Shopify Plus: Native B2B features built into the platform — company accounts, multiple contacts per company, net payment terms, custom price lists per customer, and draft orders at scale. If you have a wholesale channel, Plus is the right tool.

Multi-Store and Expansion Stores

  • Shopify (standard): One store per subscription.
  • Shopify Plus: Up to 9 expansion stores included in the base price. Run your US, UK, and EU stores as separate storefronts — each with its own currency, language, and inventory — under one Plus contract.

API Rate Limits

  • Shopify (standard): Standard REST and GraphQL API rate limits, which can become a bottleneck for high-volume integrations with ERPs, fulfilment systems, or custom reporting tools.
  • Shopify Plus: Higher API call limits that matter when you’re syncing thousands of orders per day or running real-time inventory integrations.

Dedicated Support

  • Shopify (standard): 24/7 general support via chat and email.
  • Shopify Plus: A dedicated Merchant Success Manager and access to the Plus-only partner ecosystem. Faster escalation paths and more knowledgeable support for complex platform questions.

Launchpad

  • Shopify Plus only: Launchpad lets you schedule product launches, sales, price changes, and theme changes in advance. If you run frequent drops, flash sales, or seasonal campaigns, this tool removes significant operational overhead.

When to Upgrade to Shopify Plus

Consider upgrading when one or more of the following is true:

  1. Revenue is consistently above $500K–$1M/year and the plan cost represents a small percentage of GMV
  2. Checkout conversion is a priority and you want to add custom UI elements, upsells, or loyalty integrations at checkout
  3. You have a wholesale or B2B channel that needs professional tooling — not workarounds
  4. You run multiple storefronts or plan to expand into international markets with separate stores
  5. Automation is eating your team’s time — if you’re doing things manually that Flow could handle automatically, the ROI is there
  6. Your ERP or fulfilment integration is hitting API rate limits during peak periods

When to Stay on Standard Shopify

You probably don’t need Plus if:

  • You’re doing under $500K/year and growing steadily — get there first
  • You don’t have a wholesale channel and don’t need checkout code access
  • You’re running a single market, single currency store with straightforward operations
  • The features you want are available via apps on standard plans

There’s no shame in being on standard Shopify. The platform is genuinely excellent for most stores, and over-investing in infrastructure before you need it is a real way to burn cash.

The Honest Take

Shopify Plus is a genuinely powerful platform for brands at scale — but it’s not a revenue magic wand. Upgrading won’t fix a conversion problem on its own. It gives you tools that enable better operations and better checkout experiences. You still have to do the work.

If you’re approaching $1M in revenue, have a B2B channel, or are running into the limitations above, Plus is likely a smart investment. If you’re not there yet, optimize relentlessly on standard Shopify first — and upgrade when the features pay for themselves.
